This year, in addition to two recipients of the 2024 legal bursary awards, a third student will receive the inaugural Jonathan Betts Legal Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honour and memory of Jonathan Betts, former head of the corporate department in Bermuda. Lily Martin has been awarded the inaugural Jonathan Betts Legal Scholarship in the amount of $30,000.
Lily is currently studying at BPP University where she is completing her Barrister Training Course. This is Lily's second summer with Walkers as a legal intern where she is gaining work experience across two rotations within the firm's corporate practice and insolvency & disputes practice. She looks forward to continuing her legal experience with Walkers and further developing her practical skills during her time at Walkers this year.
"We are delighted to be able to honour Jonathan and his everlasting legacy here at Walkers through this scholarship" said Kevin Taylor, managing partner of the Bermuda office. "Jonnie was a highly respected member of the legal community and a mentor to many. We hope to convey his passion for the development and enhancement of young legal professionals for years to come."
Oslo Adamson and Kennedy Wilks are the recipients of the 2024 legal bursary awards, receiving $10,000 each to support them in their legal studies.
Oslo will soon be entering the second year of his Bachelor of Laws at Durham University and has returned to Walkers as a legal intern for a second summer. Oslo has gained valuable insights into the legal practice through his time at the firm, most recently assisting the team with case law research and correspondence drafting. He is eager to continue developing his career and legal skills during his internship this summer.
Kennedy will be entering his second year of the Bachelor of Laws (Global Law) degree at Queen Mary, University of London this fall. Kennedy completed a summer internship with Walkers this July and appreciated the diversity of the programme, which included in-person court attendance as well as personalised training sessions on various legal topics and direct contact with partners and associates throughout the office.
McKenzie-Kohl Tuckett, recipient of the four-year Walkers Legal Scholarship in the amount of $25,000 a year, is entering the fourth and final year of her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Bristol. McKenzie-Kohl has spent the last year studying abroad at the University of Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong she placed first in the Hong Kong University Campus Toastmasters Club Competition and second in the Toastmasters Internal Area Contest. This is McKenzie-Kohl's fourth summer with Walkers as a legal intern and she looks forward to participating in this year's four-week internship programme.
"We admire these students for their outstanding academic achievements and commitment to a career in law," stated Rachel Nightingale, partner and co-chair of the firm's training committee. "We are proud to have McKenzie-Kohl, Lily, Oslo and Kennedy represent the firm as they embody the core values and principles that align with the Walkers' culture."
Nathalie West, partner and training committee co-chair, commented: "It is beyond rewarding to continue to watch these accomplished Bermudians excel in their legal education. We aim to support our scholarship and bursary recipients not just financially but also through the hands-on training offered during the legal internship programme and through the personal follow-ups and mentorship provided throughout the academic year. Congratulations to all of the recipients."
