Sellick James

James specialises in general commercial and regulatory dispute resolution and has a broad range of experience, including in the context of high-value matters.

He undertakes a range of commercial and regulatory work for international and Bermuda-based clients. He has appeared as counsel before senior judges and arbitrators in Bermuda, including as sole counsel. 

His experience includes:

  • General commercial and corporate litigation, including in the context of unfair prejudice petitions and directors’ duties
  • Regulatory matters, including sanctions compliance in the context of asset values ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars
  • Shareholder appraisal actions
  • Arbitrations, including providing strategic advice regarding arbitral processes
  • Insurance and reinsurance disputes, including in the context of infrastructure, aviation, shipping and retroactive casualty reinsurance
  • Insolvency and restructuring
  • Contentious trusts

Experience and recent work

James previously worked for another international law firm, before which he practised as a barrister in England & Wales. Before qualifying he worked as a Judicial Assistant to the (UK) Court of Appeal and obtained a first class LLM degree.

James sits on the executive committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Bermuda Branch)
James was a Jules Thorn Scholar of the Middle Temple. He received the Thomas and Elizabeth Walton Prize and the Sir Francis Goldsmid Scholarship from Cambridge. He was also a recipient of the Sweet & Maxwell Prize.
