James is a senior associate in the Insolvency and Dispute Resolution department and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
He undertakes a range of commercial and regulatory work for international and Bermuda-based clients, and has appeared as sole counsel before senior judges in Bermuda. His experience includes:
- General commercial and corporate litigation, including unfair prejudice petitions and injunctive relief
- Regulatory matters, including sanctions compliance
- Appraisal actions
- Insurance and reinsurance, including in the context of infrastructure, aviation and shipping
- Insolvency and restructuring
- Contentious trusts
- Arbitration
Experience and recent work
Prior to joining Walkers James worked in the dispute resolution department of another global offshore law firm.
Before moving to Bermuda he practised as a barrister in England & Wales, where he regularly appeared before senior judges. Early in his career he was appointed by the UK Attorney General as Treasury Counsel and, before commencing his practice as a barrister, he was a Judicial Assistant to the (UK) Court of Appeal, where he worked on various commercial appeals.
During his legal studies he obtained a first class LLM degree from the University of Cambridge, which included studying various aspects of commercial law.

James sits on the executive committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Bermuda Branch)
James was a Jules Thorn Scholar of the Middle Temple. He received the Thomas and Elizabeth Walton Prize and the Sir Francis Goldsmid Scholarship from Cambridge. He was also a recipient of the Sweet & Maxwell Prize.
