Bermuda

Pupillage

Wallkers' Bermuda office ("Firm") continues to experience rapid growth in the Bermuda legal market and is pleased to support talented rising professionals, by inviting applications from qualified Bermudians or PRC holders for pupillage contracts. The Firm has developed a comprehensive structured training program ('Programme') in line with the Walkers' global training platform, ensuring that pupils are provided with the highest level of practical, technical and soft skill training in all areas of the Firm's practice. Pupils will undertake the Programme for 12 months; 6 months in the Corporate Finance and Funds Department and 6 months in the Insolvency and Dispute Resolution Department.

Pupils will work alongside associates and partners, gaining exposure to Bermuda's most important cases and transactions, and will be formally assigned to a partner of the firm who acts as a mentor and coach for the duration of their Programme. During the Programme, pupils will be provided with a checklist of both technical and general training to complete, guiding their progression and ensuring that upon completion of the Programme, the pupil has gained hands on experience and the necessary skills to undertake a successful career as a member of the Bermuda Bar Association.

Pupillage contracts are offered to qualified Bermudians or PRC holders with consistent outstanding academic achievements, including a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelors of Law or Graduate Diploma in Law degree and at least a Commendation grade in either the Professional Practice Course, the Legal Practice Course or the Bar Professional Training Course.

Legal Scholarship

Walkers is now inviting applications from qualified Bermudians for a Legal Scholarship.

The following documentation will need to be submitted as part of your application:

  • A cover letter which explains why you consider you should be granted the Award, your interest in a career as an attorney, why you chose Walkers Bermuda and any other information you consider may be of interest to the Partners.
  • Current curriculum vitae setting out your education and work experience and any other extra curricular achievements including charitable, sporting and community activities.
  • Copies of certificates, together with official transcript of grades from final year of secondary schooling and from any university or other tertiary education institution attended.
  • One written character reference.
  • One written academic reference.
  • One written employment reference (if the applicant has been employed for a period of more than three months).
  • A letter from an approved university evidencing acceptance into an accredited law degree.
  • A letter from approved university stating tuition costs.
  • A sample of recent legal work (paper).
  • Proof of Bermudian/PRC status.

Summer Internship

Walkers is now inviting applications from qualified Bermudians for a summer internship.

Requirements for our summer internship are as follows:

  • At a minimum, secondary schooling must be completed by the commencement of the summer internship and you must have been accepted into an accredited law degree; or
  • Current enrolment in a Bachelors of Law Degree (LLB) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) from a commonwealth institution ; and

The following documentation will need to be submitted as part of your application:

  • A cover letter which includes the name of the school you are currently attending, your interest in a career as an attorney, why you chose Walkers Bermuda and any other information you consider may be of interest to the Partners.

British Virgin Islands

 

Training Programme

Walkers BVI is focusing its efforts in further developing its training programme (the "Programme") and takes a special interest in its Programme as the practice of BVI law is in constant demand and the BVI office itself continues to experience positive growth. The Programme is a structured training process intended for newly qualified lawyers (“NQs”) and is meant to ensure that NQs are provided with a practical, basic training in all the main areas of legal work undertaken by the Firm. The Programme is for a duration of 18 months, 6 months in each of the major practice areas namely, Corporate/Finance/Funds Department, the Regulatory Department, and the Insolvency Dispute Resolution Department.

Other key features of the Programme include:

  • the formal assignment of the NQ to a partner of the Firm;
  • the assignment of senior lawyers within the Firm to act as supervisors to the NQ;
  • the NQ is always physically seated in his/her Supervisor’s office in order that he/she can effectively shadow the supervisor; and
  • the issuance to the NQ of a set of training checklists setting out both general and technical indicators that the NQ should cover during his/her seat.

NQs are often called on to assist with:

  • drafting legal documents (such as Board resolutions and pleadings); research;
  • drafting security documents;
  • drafting legal opinions; and
  • drafting various applications to the local regulator.

 

Requirements

  • outstanding academics, including a minimum of LLB (with honours) at degree level, or equivalent;
  • either of the following basic qualifications gained from a commonwealth institution, Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), preferably with honours or distinction;
  • ‘commendation’ grade in one of the following professional qualifications: Professional Practice Course (PPC), Legal Practice Course (LPC), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) or Legal Education Certificate (LEC).

Applications for the Programme should include the following information:

  • a cover letter which includes name of the institution you are currently attending as well as an indication of your anticipated final results;
  • a recent CV;
  • all results received to date (i.e. A Level LLB, LPC/PPC/LEC/Bar course results); and
  • Belonger card as proof of Belonger status (passports are not accepted).

Legal Scholarships

Each year Walkers (Cayman) awards legal scholarships to high performing Caymanian students who have demonstrated a level of academic achievement which indicates they could eventually undertake articles with Walkers and work for the firm as lawyers. Successful applicants are granted scholarships for law degrees, post-graduate conversion courses and post-graduate qualifying examinations, including the Professional Practice Course, the Legal Practice Course and the Bar Professional Training Course.

Legal Training

With over 30 years' experience in legal training, Walkers (Cayman) is recognised as the first law firm in the Cayman Islands to develop a comprehensive structured training programme for articled clerks. This 18 month programme provides successful candidates with rigorous practical training in the core areas of legal work undertaken by the firm. Working alongside senior associates and partners on the Cayman Islands' most important cases and transactions, our articled clerks gain invaluable exposure and expertise in the firm's practice areas on a rotational basis. Articled clerks are formally articled to a partner of the firm who acts as a mentor and coach for the duration of their articles.

Our annual summer Legal Internship programme gives qualified Caymanians who are currently enrolled in a university law course exposure to the legal profession as well as practical experience of life in an international law firm. The Legal Internship programme is run across our main areas of work and helps successful applicants develop their commercial, presentation and team skills, which are essential in today's professional world. Students sponsored by Walkers (Cayman) are given priority access to this programme.

Junior Legal Secretary Training Programme

The Junior Legal Secretary Training Programme is designed for qualified Caymanians interested in pursuing a career as a legal secretary. For a set period (usually 18 or 24 months) successful applicants will work alongside experienced executive legal secretaries, on a rotational basis, thereby gaining invaluable experience and exposure to the firm's practice areas. Participants of this programme may also be eligible for sponsorship to undertake a professionally recognised industry qualification.

Fiduciary Services Development Programme

A tailored developmental course that runs between 18 to 24 months, the Fiduciary Services Development Programme ensures that successful candidates experience all the transaction types which make up the landscape of the structured and asset finance industry. Divided into three phases, it aims to produce technically strong industry-leading directors by developing participants' awareness and appreciation of the markets, understanding of the expectations of an industry director and skills to understand and communicate the technical aspects of a transaction. Participants of this programme may also be eligible for sponsorship to undertake a professionally recognised industry qualification.

 

Business Support Internships

Caymanians aged 16 and over are invited to apply for business support internship placements which operate on a rolling basis. Internships are available in all business support areas of the firm and will allow successful applicants to explore career options and develop new skills provide whilst providing them with practical work experience and exposure to an international law firm.
