Practice Areas

Ian McNamee is based in Walkers Irish office where he is a partner in the firm's Global Finance and Corporate Groups. Ian's principal practice areas are structured products and capital markets, distressed investment, finance, restructurings and general corporate.

In particular, he advises on Irish and EU legal and regulatory aspects of the establishment, financing, operation and management of Irish special purpose vehicles and other investment vehicles which acquire a broad range of asset classes (loans, mortgages, receivables, distressed assets, insurance products etc) around the world. Ian also advises on a wide range of finance and general corporate matters, distressed investment and other bespoke structured product transactions.​ Some recent transactions include:

  • Acting as lead counsel to a leading Asian alternative investment manager in relation to the establishment of a US$10 billion ABS programme backed by Chinese listed securities. This was a landmark transaction and the first of its kind both in Ireland and the People's Republic of China;
  • Acting as issuer counsel and advising a major European bank in connection with a DKK 5.96 billion securitisation of its Danish auto-loan book through an Irish special purpose vehicle and acting as listing agent for the notes which listed on GEM. This was the first ever Danish auto loan securitization;
  • Acting as issuer counsel and advising a major European bank in connection with a €480,000,000 Norwegian auto loan securitisation which listed on the MSM;
  • Acting as lead counsel to a UK alternative asset manager in connection with the issuance of €300,000,000 Senior Secured Notes and £300,000,000 Senior Secured Notes by an Irish special purpose vehicle which listed on GEM. The note proceeds have been used to acquire a diverse portfolio of European commercial real estate loans backed by core / core+ collateral; and
  • Acting as issuer counsel to a major European reinsurer on the issuance of a €190,000,000 catastrophe bond through an Irish special purpose reinsurance vehicle – this was the first catastrophe bond providing indemnity protection against Europe windstorm risks to be offered in a Rule 144A offering and the first European windstorm indemnity cat bond transaction to use a third-party risk modeller for risk analysis.​

Prior to joining Walkers, Ian was a member of the Banking and Finance group of a leading Irish law firm. ​
