Juliana Tang is a senior counsel in Walker's Regulatory & Risk Advisory Group in the Cayman Islands. She has over 20 years' experience in financial services regulation and compliance, with more than 10 years working in the insurance industry as a regulatory lawyer for large global insurance businesses. She also worked in the Enforcement Division at the UK Financial Conduct Authority.With substantial international regulatory experience within financial services businesses, Juliana tailors her advice to the needs and objectives of clients, striking the right balance between commerciality and compliance. Juliana acts for leading financial institutions across all sectors on a diverse range of regulatory matters, including licensing and regulatory perimeter, regulatory approvals and notifications, regulatory investigations, compliance frameworks, policies and procedures, regulatory due diligence and reviews, sanctions and export controls, financial crime, AML, economic substance, FATCA/CRS, beneficial ownership, and data protection. She also regularly advises on significant cross border transactions and reorganisations and related change of change of control applications, as well as complex matters involving the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, in particular arising from inspections, licence applications and other regulatory approvals.Juliana specialises in insurance regulatory matters with her in-depth insurance knowledge and expertise. She has specific experience advising insurers, reinsurers, captives, annuity providers, sponsors, assets managers and insurance managers on structuring and licensing Cayman class B, C and D insurers, M&A, redomiciliation, restructuring, demutualisation, and other insurance transactions, business plan changes, regulatory capital structuring and prudential requirements, insurtech initiatives and dealing with Cayman Islands Monetary Authority on regulatory inspections, remediation and breach matters.
Prior to joining Walkers, Juliana worked on a consultancy basis advising insurance sector clients in London on regulatory and compliance matters. This included advising a global insurance market service provider on sanctions law and compliance, particularly on M&A and other major transactions. She was also Head of Legal and Compliance for a global loss adjusting company that focusses on large and complex claims in aviation, energy, marine, property, casualty and special risks sectors.She was also previously a legal advisor in the Commercial and Regulatory Team at Aon, the global insurance and reinsurance intermediary and risk management firm. Juliana gained experience in a variety of teams but became Aon’s dedicated regulatory counsel advising Aon’s businesses and corporate functions on a broad range of legal and regulatory matters. Juliana also worked at the UK FCA.Juliana gained her initial regulatory experience in Australia, where she was Senior Advisor, Risk & Advisory Services, Regulation & Compliance at KPMG before moving to the UK in 2009.
