Walkers Channel Islands Growth Evident in Legal 500 Rankings

Walkers' Channel Islands offices have had four practice areas promoted in the annual Legal 500 directory, including both Guernsey and Jersey's investment funds and insolvency and dispute resolution practices.

Seven lawyers have also been singled out for individual accolades. In the Jersey office Partners Jonathan Heaney and Nigel Weston have been ranked as 'Leading Individuals' and partners Robert Dobbyn and Mark Crichton have been ranked as 'Next Generation Lawyers'.

In Guernsey, Louise Hall, Alison Ozanne and Walkers Guernsey's new partner Kate Storey have been ranked as 'Leading Individuals'. For Louise and Alison this follows on from their recognition in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame 2018, a new accolade from Legal 500 which highlights individuals who have received constant praise by their clients.

"These results are very pleasing and I congratulate the teams for their hard work and dedication. It is especially pleasing as the market is clearly noticing the work we are doing to expand the Walkers Channel Islands offering," stated Jersey Managing Partner, Jonathan Heaney

"There is some very well deserved movement up the rankings and some excellent individual comments in these results. A tribute to the hard work and effort put in by all of the team at Walkers," commented Guernsey Managing Partner, Louise Hall

Extracts from the guide read:

At Walkers Guernsey, 'advice is knowledgeable and tailored to the transaction' and clients value the 'extremely good service provide'.

At Walkers Guernsey, the team offers an 'excellent service', 'technical expertise and negotiation skills'.

Walkers Jersey is ‘as responsive and efficient as any New York or London firm’.

Walkers Jersey ‘always delivers on time and the work commissioned is always completed to exceptionally high standards’.

Walkers Shows Strength in Depth at Employment Conferences

Leading IFC law firm Walkers last week held a conference in both Guernsey and Jersey to consider managing information and the legalities that surround collecting and using information, with a focus on data protection. A roster of eight speakers presented to an audience of more than 150 delegates across both islands.

The Walkers team were joined by Keynote speaker Paul Goulding QC of Blackstone Chambers. Paul, who is widely recognised as one of the top silks in employment law, urged delegates to consider carefully what is considered to be 'confidential information' and to ensure correct contractual terms are in place.

Prominent employment lawyer and Walkers Guernsey Managing Partner Louise Hall presented along with senior counsel and senior associates from Walkers' expanding Channel Islands employment law team, Sarah Ash, Daniel Read, Victoria Pratt and Niall MacDonald. The team was supported by Walkers' Fintech expert Stephen Ozanne.

Sarah Ash joins Walkers Guernsey from an international law firm where she worked in the Labour and Employment Practice in London. She advises on all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law.

Daniel Read joins the team from another international offshore law firm in Jersey. He has a broad range of commercial litigation experience with a particular specialism in contentious employment law, trust litigation, and general commercial litigation.

Speaking about the conference Louise commented:-

"Employment law is constantly evolving and we need to be on top of these changes to advise our clients. Whether it is in respect of dealing with a data subject access request, understanding how to protect confidential information or dealing with a security breach there are rules and procedures that need to be followed. I'm thrilled that Paul Goulding was able to join us and delighted to have had such a good turnout at both events, specifically in Jersey where it was our inaugural event in this area."

Walkers Jersey Senior Counsel Daniel Read said:-

"As a new member of the Walkers employment team in the Channel Islands I'm delighted to have been part of these conferences. It was particularly encouraging to see so many HR experts and others in the audience and for them to see the breadth of expertise in the Walkers employment teams on both Islands. I very much look forward to working with them all in my new role at Walkers Jersey."

Walkers Guernsey Senior Counsel Sarah Ash added:-

"I am delighted to have joined Walkers Guernsey at a time where the employment team is growing and we can offer our clients a pan-Island service. The conferences were very well attended and delegates certainly saw the benefit of our pan-Island capabilities at both events. With GDPR (and the equivalent Guernsey and Jersey legislation) now more than four months in force it is clear that there is still a need for clear and concise interpretation of this complex area and we hope that our delegates felt the conference was of significant value to them and their businesses."
